I debated for a good 30 seconds about whether this post would be about the approaching typhoon or about my really crappy lesson yesterday. I decided to go for the awesomeness that is weather.
I am just hours away from my first typhoon. Which I was not even aware of until just yesterday. Typhoon 18 (as the Japanese call it; in the English-speaking world, apparently it's Typhoon Melor) is currently just getting to the Japanese mainland. Should be around me sometime after 3am in the morning (ie. 2pm Wed, EST... er... EDT).
I got an announcement this afternoon (which I actually figured out in Japanese!) saying that if there's a severe wind warning at 7am, the students get to stay home till 10am. If there's still a warning at 10, the students get the day off. Otherwise they'll have to come in for a half day.
And the teachers? Yeah, we have to come in no matter what. My supervisor basically told me that I had to come to work unless I physically am unable (due to flooding, blocked/downed bridges, etc.), in which case I should call and they'll get me a ride. :) While an actual day off would be nice, I personally don't mind having to go in to work that much. It'll be a lazy day -- good for studying Japanese. I am amused by the fact that I have to go to work in the middle of a typhoon though.
I'm not gonna lie... I'm kind of excited about this. Probably because I have no reference point for typhoons. Tornadoes I understand. And I'm scared of them. Typhoons, I just don't know what to do with. So for now, I'm just waiting for it to arrive.
Bring it on, Typhoon Melor!
